The Philippines government has increased the minimum wage for overseas Filipino domestic workers to US$500, a 25% increase from its current requirement of US$400. However, within weeks of the decision, the Southeast Asian country–one of the largest source of domestic workers in the GCC–announced the increase would not apply to the region.
Kuwait has banned the entry of all Filipino nationals, except those with valid residence permits. The ban includes those who possess new work visas. A Philippines official says the move is a retaliatory measure aimed at forcing the sending country’s hand.

The Phillippines has implemented a partial ban on domestic workers to Kuwait following the murder of a 26-year-old domestic worker, Jeanelyn Padernal Villavende, by her employers.
Kuwait and the Philippines have signed a MoU on the employment of domestic workers. Provisions of the agreement include commitments to 24/7 hotline and creation of a special police unit to respond to complaints, guaranteed access to phones, and a prohibition against confiscation of passports. The Philippines' ban on workers to Kuwait was lifted shortly after the agreement was signed.
