Indonesia Demands more Protection for Migrants from Kuwait

Indonesia plans on lifting the ban on sending migrant workers to Kuwait after a signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kuwaiti government that is set to guarantee more rights for the workers.

The Indonesian government imposed a ban on sending workers to Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Kuwait in late 2009 following an increase in the reported cases of abuse of Indonesian workers in those countries.

According to a report - Opens in new tabby Gulf News, the MoU is expected to include a monthly minimum wage for workers, an end to the practice of sponsors of withholding passports, and a weekly day off. The Kuwaiti government is yet to agree to the terms presented by the Indonesian government.
