EU and ILO launch safer migration project for South Asians

The ILO and the EU have joined forces to launch a project to promote safer migration from India, Nepal and Pakistan to the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

The project, titled Promoting Effective Governance of Labour Migration from South Asia - Opens in new tab, will focus on pre-departure skills training, and measures in GCC to countries to improve migrant safety such as e-governance tools and provisions for more effective workplace inspections.

Rensje Teerink, Ambassador, European Union Delegation to Nepal, said:

“The EU recognises that while labour migration generates substantial benefits for countries of origin and destination, it can also negatively impact the lives of migrant workers. Abuse of migrant workers during recruitment and employment is a common, well-documented issue. Women face barriers in finding overseas employment, and female migrant domestic workers are among the most vulnerable to abuses. These concerns prompt EU to support the implementation of projects like these”.

The ILO and EU will work in partnership with local NGOs, micro finance institutions, diaspora organisations and embassies on the project, which will run until May 2016.
